Map of Japan

This is a combination maps to see Japanese chain location-wise. I hope it helps you to get a rough geographical sense of the whole Japan and the each region and Tokyo.

On the upper map, which shows whole Japanese islands, I colored each region using different colors. Generally Japan is divided into seven regions which are called Hokkaido, Tohoku (The Northeast), Kanto (Around Tokyo), Chubu (The Central), Kinki (Around Osaka and Kyoto), Shikoku, and Kyusyu.

Let's see the prefectures belong to each region from north to south through the Japanese chain.
  • Hokkaido Region (Hokkaido Prefecture)
  • Tohoku  Region (Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi, and Fukushima, 6 prefectures)
  • Kanto Region (Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Chiba, Saitama, Kanagawa, Tokyo, 6 prefectures)
  • Chubu Region (Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, Nagano, Gifu, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, and Aichi,  9 prefectures)
  • Kinki Region (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Shiga, Hyogo, Wakayama, Mie, 7 prefectures)
  • Chugoku Region (Okayama, Hiroshima, Shimane, Tottori, and Yamaguchi, 5 prefectures)
  • Shikoku Region (Kagawa, Tokushima, Ehime, Kouch, 4 prefectures)
  • Kyusyu Region (Fukuoka, Oita, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, Kagoshima, and Okinawa, 8 prefectures)

The lowest map shows Tokyo. Tokyo is the Capital prefecture of Japan consisting of 23 wards, 26 cities, 3towns, a village and small islands on the south sea. The 23 wards are considered as the main part of Tokyo metropolis and other areas are more residential areas.
In addition, the Diet Building(Kokkai Gijido) and the Prime Minister's Official Residence(Shusho Kantei) are located in Chiyoda Ward same as the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station. You can see the location on the map.
